One of our staff recently drove the X-Trail for a few weeks, here’s their review.
After spending three weeks with Nissan's family-friendly X-Trail Station Wagon, I've formed some strong opinions about this midsize SUV contender. Walking up to it each morning, I couldn't help but appreciate how Nissan has evolved the exterior styling - that signature V-motion grille catches the light nicely, and the LED lighting arrangement gives it a distinct personality without shouting for attention.
Pop the hood and you'll find either the standard 1.5-litre VC-Turbo mild-hybrid producing a modest 161bhp, or the more intriguing e-Power setup. I tested both extensively. The standard engine handled my daily school run and weekend motorway trips competently enough, if not excitingly. The e-Power system, though? That's where things get interesting.
Nissan's approach here differs from conventional hybrids - the petrol engine functions purely as a generator, with the wheels driven exclusively by electricity. The promised fuel savings didn't quite materialize during my testing period, however. Through mixed driving including a particularly gruelling crawl through London traffic, I averaged figures comparable to traditional hybrid competitors.
Living with the X-Trail day-to-day reveals thoughtful interior design choices. The touchscreen responds promptly to inputs and smartphone connectivity worked flawlessly throughout my loan period. On a family trip to the Lake District, my front passenger and three kids (aged 8, 12, and 14) found the first and second rows perfectly comfortable for the four-hour journey. We briefly experimented with the third-row seats when collecting the grandparents from the train station, but I wouldn't recommend subjecting adults to those seats for anything beyond short hops around town.
The X-Trail truly shines on Britain's increasingly pockmarked roads. Driving through a particularly rough stretch of recently "repaired" B-road, I was impressed by how the suspension soaked up imperfections without fuss. It's not trying to be sporty - and frankly, I appreciate that. This vehicle knows its purpose: comfortable, fuss-free family transport.
Boot space proved more than adequate for our camping weekend, swallowing four people's worth of gear with room to spare. The tailgate opening is pleasingly wide, and I didn't strain my back loading our heavy cooler - always a practical consideration.
During an unexpected April snow shower, I was grateful for the all-wheel drive system, which provided reassuring traction when most other school-run parents were struggling.
Would I recommend it? For growing families prioritizing space, comfort and practicality, absolutely. Just don't expect the third row to comfortably accommodate teenagers or adults on longer journeys, and take the e-Power efficiency claims with a grain of salt based on your specific driving patterns.
The X-Trail balances the competing demands of family life while incorporating some genuinely useful technology. After three weeks behind the wheel, I found myself surprisingly reluctant to hand back the keys.
